The Morning After: Thoughts on The Election Coverage
Best Front Page: The Chicago Sun-Times' cover this morning. An elegant photo, with the wonderfully concise caption, "Mr. President."
Slow Going: CNN was conservative in calling races all night, lagging behind CBS and NBC in particular. Still must be feeling the sting of election 2000.

Speed Demon: CBS election veteran Bob Schieffer was among the first to basically call the race for Obama, from what I could tell. Shortly before 9:30 p.m. eastern time, after Pennsylvania had gone blue, Schieffer told Katie Couric, "I just don't see any way he (McCain) can win now."

Oddly Phrased: MSNBC's David Gregory kept saying he'd have predictions and "characterizations" of races. Huh?

Moving Moments: Jesse Jackson's tears at the Grant Park celebration; Democratic strategist Donna Brazile's comments, on several different networks, about what it meant to her to witness the election of an African-American president; Obama's victory speech in front of a multi-racial Chicago crowd.

Silly Techno-Geek Stuff: The CNN hologram that had reporters doing the Princess Leia "help us Obi-Wan Kenobi" routine in front of Wolf Blitzer. And what was the deal with that gigantic ABC News election desk? Even in HD the cameras couldn't pan wide enough to get both Charles Gibson, Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos in the same frame. Obama could have landed his charter plane on that monstrosity.
Hawkwoman: MSNBC's Rachel Maddow sounding very hawkish in her reaction to the line in Obama's speech where he said, "To those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you." Maddow praised Obama for the line, adding that the Sept. 11 attacks on this country "have not yet been avenged."
Most Heartening Reaction: The enthusiastic coverage of Obama's victory by news organizations around the world. Perhaps the repairs to America's damaged image abroad have already begun.

I agree that CNN was way too conservative. I was watching ABC and MSNBC as well and they called it a long time before. I also thought that Maddow was uncharacteristically hawkish. I really loved the NY times front cover as well and have kept it as a souvenir.
