First-quarter earnings figures for many newspaper companies are due out soon, and predictions are grim, The New York Times reports.
Some papers will report losses of 30 percent, and losses of 20 percent or more will be common, The Times reported, based on interviews with sources in the industry.
Gannett, the country's largest newspaper chain, has already said its newspaper ad revenue was down roughly 30 percent so far this year, and even more than that at USA Today, its biggest paper.
Some glimmers of hope: Smaller papers seemed to be doing slightly better than large ones. Also, the the year-over-year drop in March wasn't as dramatic as the same period for January and February.
