Critics often accuse blogs of doing little more than copying stories done by the “real” reporters at newspapers, but Talking Points Memo has made its mark as a blog known for, among other things, first-rate reporting.
Last year, TPM became the first web-only news operation to receive a prestigious George Polk Award for its coverage of the politically motivated firing of eight United States attorneys. The citation accompanying the award noted that TPM’s investigative reporting “sparked interest by the traditional news media and led to the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.”
That would be no small feat even for a large metropolitan newspaper with hundreds of editorial staffers. The fact that TPM did it with little more than a handful of reporters in New York and Washington is even more impressive. Read more...
