After years of layoffs, news outlets - print, online and otherwise - are hiring again, says Dan Rohn, founder of JournalismJobs.com.
"Hiring has definitely picked up since the first of this year," Rohn says in an e-mail. "It feels like there's a sense that things are improving economically overall and companies are more willing to take a chance and do more hiring."
Rohn says "even with newspapers - which are supposed to be dead - I'm seeing a good number of traditional openings being advertised as well as online jobs."
He adds that while companies are being pickier than in the past, "the qualifications from job seekers is better than it has been in awhile, with all the layoffs over the past few years."
So which companies in particular are hiring? Some of the high-profile ones include the Wall St. Journal, which is adding 35 staffers to beef up its New York coverage. Yahoo, Bloomberg and CBS Interactive are hiring, and The New York Times is looking for a web designer.
But beyond the big companies, it seems, there are jobs at smaller places as well:
• The Green Bay Press-Gazette is looking for someone to cover the Packers
• The York Daily Record in Pennsylvania needs a copy editor
• The Eagle-Tribune in North Andover, Mass., is looking for an enterprise reporter.
• The Columbus Dispatch in Ohio needs a metro desk reporter
That's just a sampling. And while there are still hiring freezes or layoffs continuing in many places, and thousands of laid-off journalists looking for work, it's nice to hear a little good news about the news biz for a change.
