A Citizen Journalist's Toolkit

The Tools of the Trade

Pen & Reporter's Notebooks

So you want to get started as a citizen journalist covering events in your community? Here are a few basic tools of the trade.

Reporter's Notebooks

You'll need a stack of reporter's notebooks. They're the thin ones with the spiral binders at the top instead of the side, made to fit in a back pocket or purse. You can get these at most office supply stories.

Carry a reporter's notebook with you wherever you go. You never know when you might come across, say, a bank robbery in progress. Bring a few pens as well, along with a pencil if you're working in subzero weather (pen ink freezes in severe cold.)

Cost: Under $10
