Campaign 2008 Newspaper Endorsements

From Bridget Johnson, for About.com

Every campaign season, publishers and editorial boards decide which candidate gets their vote -- followed by telling their readers to vote for the same. Click the links for round-ups of the candidates' thumbs-up from publications in the presidential primaries. (NOTE: Most newspapers endorsing at this stage choose one Democrat and one Republican, but a few only pick one. Some newspapers do not endorse at all in primaries. States are in chronological order.)

1. Iowa Endorsements

CAUCUS -- Jan. 3: While tending to favor Hillary Clinton and John McCain, Iowa newspaper endorsements have also favored other GOP and Democratic candidates.

2. New Hampshire Endorsements

PRIMARY -- Jan. 8: The presidential picks by newspapers in the Granite State, while varied, have been unique as two papers issued "anti-endorsements" against Republican Mitt Romney.

3. Michigan Endorsements

Bumping the primary up to Jan. 15 here violated the Democratic National Committee's rules, prompting a threat to not seat delegates and causing candidates to drop off the ballot. Papers are therefore focusing on the GOP ticket here.

4. Nevada Endorsements

The presidential primaries look westward as Democratic and Republican caucuses are scheduled for Jan. 19. And if you've ever driven through the middle of Nevada, you have to sympathize with any candidate who tries to cover all that territory!

5. South Carolina Endorsements

Talk about a split decision -- South Carolina Republicans go to the polls on Jan. 19, and Democrats will pick their candidate on Jan. 26.

6. Florida Endorsements

The Jan. 29 primary is a show for the Republican field (and a tight race, at that): The state was stripped of its Democratic delegates as a penalty for holding the primary early, and Democratic candidates have thus avoided the state.

7. Maine Endorsements

Maine's Republican caucus is scheduled for Feb. 1-2. The Democrats' caucus will be Feb. 10, just days after Super Tuesday primaries and caucuses are held in nearly two dozen states.

8. Alabama Endorsements

SUPER TUESDAY - Alabama voters will cast their ballots with much of the nation on Feb. 5.

9. Arizona Endorsements

SUPER TUESDAY - The nomination race will heat up in the desert on Feb. 5 as Arizona voters go to the polls.

10. California Endorsements

SUPER TUESDAY state: Call it Super Cowabunga Tuesday -- the California primary is bumped up to Feb. 5 this year to give voters an earlier say in the nomination process.
