Name: Jennifer Golding
Job: Interning for statecollege.com, a comprehensive website for the greater Penn State area.
What are your responsibilities? To report on news and events at Penn State and in State College and to come up with and develop story ideas of my own.
What's a typical workday? The internship program is flexible. I make my own “hours,” in that if I see a developing story, I investigate details and take the time to write an article. If I’m covering a certain event such as a football game, I make sure to submit the story in a timely fashion.
Background: I received an associate’s degree in journalism from Bucks County Community College in 2009. I worked on the paper there, The Centurion, reporting, writing, and editing.
What are the skills young journalists need today? Just writing basic news stories is not enough. Journalists need to know how to work with various forms of multimedia such as photography, videography, and even social networking sites. Knowing how to use technology is becoming more and more crucial in this field.
Any advice to aspiring journalists? Write as much as possible. Having numerous clips to choose from when it comes to submitting writing samples for an internship or a job is always beneficial.
