A woman cradles her injured baby. A child with a bandaged head clings to her mother's leg. A body lies on a busy street, unattended. These are the images of suffering that have emerged in the immediate aftermath of the magnitude-7 Haitian earthquake that struck late in the afternoon of Tuesday, Jan. 12. The devastation is so overwhelming that as of this writing there is still no clear sense of how many were killed, though estimates run as high as 500,000. And in a country all-too accustomed to suffering, for now there is more than anyone can bear. As always, pictures tell the story. A note: Some of the images in this gallery are graphic.
