More and more reporters are using Facebook in journalism as a way of connecting with sources and developing ideas for articles. Here are five ways to use Facebook in journalism.
1. Find Ideas
Looking for ideas for articles? See what people are talking about on Facebook. Or ask your Facebook friends what they're interested in reading about. Chances are if people are talking about something on Facebook, they'll probably be interested in reading more about it.
2. Find Sources for Articles
Are you doing an article on, say, the rising cost of a gallon of gas? Put out the word on Facebook to see what people have to say. Or use Facebook to find someone who might be an authority on the subject.
3. Network With People and Groups You Cover
Do you cover the local music scene? Seek out the Facebook pages of local bands or musicians. Do you cover the local economy? Find the Facebook pages for your local chamber of commerce or businesses in the area. Such pages can provide valuable information and sources.
4. Conduct Interviews
Facebook can be a great way to set up and conduct interviews. Just message the person you want to talk to and away you go. (Just be sure they know you're doing an interview. You don't want to mislead a source.)
5. Promote Your Articles
One your article is written, post a link to it on Facebook. Use the feedback you get to generate still more ideas for articles.
